As per the previous post, I am thinking about planning a trip to USA this year. I am sure there are loads of people who have told you about their experience in planning trips.. But I was just wondering.... since I am rather free and have not much to do... I shall share my experiences while doing my research....
p/s: I am definitely not an expert in planning trips though I have managed to pull off a few without major incidents....

I will not give you details on what you should do or how you should do it since I am sure everybody has their preference towards things that they would like to do and I have not travelled to these places myself. And.... if you are thinking that it is too much a hassle to plan your own trip.... there are always tour agencies standing by to assist you.... For me, I think they are usually too constricted for me.... because I love to laze around and just do what I want to do. I am not a go getter when travelling because I prefer to enjoy the unexpected than to tick off "must-do-for-tourists" places. To say the least, I did not even see a koala bear or kangaroo during my last Australia trip. (and these are, in my opinion, the perfect excuses to go back to these places in the future)

Task 1:
Number of people travelling
Reason: It will usually determine what kind of transport and accomodations you are probably going take during the trip. I feel that the larger the number, the more difficult the travelling will become because everybody have their own opinions and preference to things they would like to do. The fact that they are spending quite a big sum of money to travel usually amplifies their willingness to share their opinion.
This trip: Looking at around 6 people but I generally plan for 2 as I plan to go ahead with the plan even if others do not want to join for various reasons (i.e. expensive, can't take leave, things that they do not like to do and the lists goes on). I recognize that people do back out (and very often too) and if I have to go through all these research and abandoning the travel plan.... I will be rather upset and become unmotivated to plan.

Task 2:
Duration and budget
Reason: For obvious reasons, these are things will determine the number of places you will go and almost everything (food, travel, accomodations). But for me, it's usually a guide for me to work on so that I am aware of how much to work with.
This trip: Around 2 weeks and budget of SGD5000 (it is a tight budget we are looking at because the flight tickets alone could deduct the amount by 30-40%. In the back of my mind... I am thinking to travel to both east coast and west coast (san francisco, las vegas, los angeles, new york etc) or west coast and texas (distinct cowboy culture I guess.... a farmstay might be nice). To me, a stay of 2-3 days per city will be sufficient do most of the things in the place before you get sick of it. so for me 2 weeks translates to 14 days and thus I can travel comfortably around 4 to 6 places.

Task 3:
General research
Unless the folks you are travelling with already have an idea of what to do and where to go, I think it's a good idea to look through other people's travels/ travel plans to give you an idea of what you would like to do. I wouldn't recommend any specific websites because I generally google USA 14 days travel plans and browse randomly but one website keeps popping up: Yahoo Travel Trip Planner. Quite interesting place to navigate. Currently at this stage... Shall update soon!
